Nagpur News: The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered the state government to provide details of the exact area under cotton cultivation in the state and the estimated annual income.

M.T. Representative, Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered the state government to provide details of the exact area under cotton cultivation in the state and the estimated annual income. The court has ordered the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to submit this information within two weeks. After that, the CCI has to formulate a policy regarding cotton procurement centers and submit a report to the court. Shriram Satpute of Grahak Panchayat Maharashtra has filed this public interest litigation. It was heard before a bench of Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Sachin Deshmukh on Wednesday. According to the petition, since the government cotton procurement centers are not opening on time, traders buy from farmers at a rate lower than the guaranteed price. This causes huge losses to farmers. Therefore, it has been demanded that procurement centers should be opened in all talukas before Diwali and money should be deposited in the farmers' accounts within seven days after the sale.

Responding to the petition, CCI said that 121 centers have been started in the state since October 1, 2024, and seven more centers were started as per demand. A total of 128 centers are running. However, the petitioners rejected this claim, saying that since tenders were floated for some centers in December-January, those centers were not running since October. On this, CCI has been accused of giving wrong information to the court. The next hearing on the petition will be held on July 28. Satpute himself appeared in the court.
