Mudukulathur-Ramanathapuram district has been experiencing summer rains for the past one week. Due to this, in more than 50 villages in Mudugulathur, Kamudi, the cotton crop has been affected by the rot disease. Due to this, the farmers have expressed their anguish that there has been a loss of yield at the time of harvest.

In more than 50 villages in and around Mudugulathur, next to paddy cultivation, cotton cultivation, which requires less water, is being done. More than 2000 acres of cotton have been planted in various villages including Venneer Vaikkal, Vilangulathur, Kakkur, Buliangudi, Theriruveli, Geezathuval, Champakulam, Appanendal, Kelal near Mudukulathur.

As the summer rains have been falling for the past few days while the flowers are growing and ripening, the cotton crop has been affected by rot.

Murugan, a farmer from Tuluthulathur, said that many people have cultivated more cotton this year. They pumped borehole water to the cotton plant when the monsoon failed. The cotton plants have grown somewhat and the pods have ripened. In this case, while the cotton fluff has started to burst, due to the summer rains, insects have attacked the plant and the cotton has turned yellow and wasted.

As a result, the expected price of cotton wool is likely to decrease. We have spent up to Rs.15 thousand per acre. Therefore, concerned agricultural officials should  inspect the villages and provide compensation, he said. (Source: m.dinamalar.com)
