The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its October estimates (as on 31st October 2012) of the cotton crop for the season 2012-13. CAI has placed the cotton crop for the season 2012-13 at 354.25 lakh bales. This year is likely to witness a 3 per cent decrease in area under cotton over last year. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2012-13 estimated the total cotton supply at 417.46 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 266.00 lakh bales, thus leaving an available surplus of 151.46 lakh bales. The arrivals as on 31st October 2011 are placed at 11.75 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2012-13 and the corresponding data for the previous season 2011-12 is given below.
The cotton crop looks promising this year also despite reduction in cotton acreage. This is due to the good rains received specially in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in the later part of the monsoon.
It is heartening to note that the Government has geared up to meet the challenge of a big minimum support price operation. The burden of the Government can however be drastically reduced if the exports are expedited by providing a facilitative and export friendly policy. In this regard, the Association has already requested the Government to remove minor irritants in the form of a ceiling of 10000 bales upto which an exporter can apply for registration at a time and the registration of cotton exports.
