Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its October estimates (as on 31st October 2009) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 305 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 383.50 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was estimated at 240.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 143.50 lakh bales. The CAI estimated the cotton exports during 2009-10 season at 70.00 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 is given below.
There is a clear surplus in the demand/supply situation. Looking to the present trend of consumption, regular quantum of imports and estimating an export of 70 lakh bales (last year approximately 33 lakh bales) the carry out for the cotton year ending September 30th 2010 will be a healthy 73.50 lakh bales (last year 71.50* lakh bales). At the present rate of consumption the carry out is sufficient to cover more than 3.5 months demand which is an extremely comfortable position for September 2010.
The international markets have been firm and the domestic prices are following suit.
Registrations for export shipments of cotton for the new season so far are approximately 1.15 lakh bales.
The crop would have been much larger but for the erratic monsoon. However, the highest ever acreage under cotton is expected to more than compensate for the loss due to lower yields.
