As per CAI’s latest estimate as on 30th June 2009, the cotton crop for the season 2008-09 is expected to be 291.75 lakh bales.  The Cotton Balance Sheet as estimated by CAI shows the total supply at 344.75 lakh bales and the domestic consumption at only 240 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 104.75 lakh bales.  CAI estimates the total exports during the current season at 35 lakh bales. A statement containing the Statewise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2008-09 is given below.

CAI hopes that any marginal impact on the production for the next season owing to delayed monsoon in the current season may be somewhat neutralised by farmers in some cotton growing areas shifting from other crops requiring high moisture, to cotton which is known to be a desert crop.
