Source: PRESS RELEASE

Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its July estimates (as on 31st July 2009) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2008-09.  The CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the season at 292.75 lakh bales, marginally higher by 1.00 lakh bales than its previous estimates in June 2009.  The Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year estimated the total cotton supply at 345.75 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption is estimated by CAI at 240.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 105.75 lakh bales.  The CAI estimates the cotton exports during the 2008-09 season at 35.00 lakh bales.  A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2008-09 is given below.

As forecasted by the CAI earlier, the acreage under cotton has gone up due to the migration of area from the crops requiring high moisture to cotton, which requires a very little moisture and is known as a desert crop.  CAI hopes this to be supplemented by increase in yield, which has shown an upward trend during the last four years.
