NEW DELHI - India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed 27.6% on year to $10.48 bln in September, due to decline in oil, coal and gold imports, data released today by the commerce and industry ministry showed. On a sequential basis also, the trade deficit in September narrowed from $12.48 in August. Both exports and imports, however, posted on-year contractions for the tenth consecutive month. Exports declined 24.3% on year to $21.84 bln in September, while imports fell 25.4% to $32.32 bln.

 

Oil imports declined 54.5% on year in September to $6.63 bln, while non-oil imports fell 10.7% on year to $25.70 bln.  Gold imports also declined 45.6% on year to $2.06 bln in September after rising a whopping 140% on year in the previous month. Imports of coal, coke and briquettes declined 35.6% on year to $910 mln.

 

Pulses imports rose 10.1% on year to $257 mln in September, while engineering goods imports fell 22.8% on year to $5.03 bln, the data showed. The country imported electronic goods worth $4.39 bln in September, up 24.7% on year, while fertiliser imports rose 63.6% on year to $997.9 mln. Gems and jewellery exports fell 18.8% on year to $3.65 bln during the month, while iron ore exports declined 40.4% on year to $9.5 mln, the data showed.

 

Exports of petroleum products contracted 60.4% to $2.45 bln in September. Total exports in Apr-Sep declined 17.6% to $132.94 bln, while imports fell 14.2% to $200.93 bln. India's trade deficit in Apr-Sep narrowed to $67.99 bln from $72.69 bln in the corresponding period last year.
