City-based Ginning Training Centre (GTC) is emerging as a prominent training centre in India and is fast gaining reputation abroad. A part of Central Institute for Research in Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), GTC conducted a special training cum exposure programme on 'post-harvest management of cotton and value addition to crop residue' for select African countries. Speaking to TOI, CIRCOT director S K Chattopadhyay said that this training was specially designed keeping in view the needs of the African countries and will help in improvement of cotton ginning and value addition to crop residue in cotton.

"The training besides practical hands on experience also consisted of demonstrations, discussions etc. We also gave away publications in this regard in English and French," he said. The training is a part of the Technical Assistance Programme (TAP) for cotton for South African countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Malawi, Nigeria and Uganda. The programme aims at providing development support on cotton as well solve country specific problems related to production, processing and value addition prevailing in these countries and suggesting remedial measures.

The training was inaugurated by K K Singh, additional director general of processing at CIRCOT, Mumbai. Head (technology transfer division) and principal investigator of cotton TAP P G Patil explained the programme. S K Shukla, the scientist and officer-in-charge of GTC said the participants included representatives from private sector, policy makers, producers, production technologists, scientists and entrepreneurs.
