The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its February Estimates (as on 28th February 2010) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 301.00 lakh bales.  The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 381.50 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was estimated at 247.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 134.50 lakh bales.  The CAI estimated the cotton exports during 2009-10 season at 68.00 lakh bales.  A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 is given below.

The arrivals as of 28th February 2010 constitute approximately 76% of the expected crop. The quality and the pace of arrivals continue to be good.

Prices have remained steady mainly because of higher international prices of cotton and good realisation by Spinners of yarn.

Spinners are expected to realise even better value for their goods because of recent developments in Pakistan where yarn exports have been capped to a maximum of 35,000 tons per month.  Pakistan is the biggest competitor of India for exports of yarn.
