The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its December estimates (as on 31st December 2012) of the cotton crop for the season 2012-13. CAI has placed the cotton crop for the season 2012-13 at 353.25 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2012-13 estimated the total cotton supply at 418.46 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 271.00 lakh bales, thus leaving an available surplus of 147.46 lakh bales. The arrivals as on 31st December 2012 are placed at 102.50 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2012-13 and the corresponding data for the previous season 2011-12 is given below.
The cotton crop continues to look promising this year despite the reduction in cotton acreage.
Meanwhile, it is also heartening to note that the mill sector is performing well inspite of the power cuts in south India.
The Association places on record its sincere appreciation to the Government of India for raising the cap on registrations allotted to an individual exporter to 30,000 bales from 10,000 bales. The Association will continue to make efforts to do away with the ceiling and registration of cotton exports altogether.
