The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its December Estimates (as on 31st December 2009) of the Cotton Crop for the season 2009-10. CAI estimated the Cotton Crop for the new season at 303.00 lakh bales.  The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2009-10, estimated the total cotton supply at 383.50 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption was estimated at 247.00 lakh bales, thus leaving a surplus of 136.50 lakh bales.  The CAI estimated the cotton exports during 2009-10 season at 65.00 lakh bales.  A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2009-10 is given below.

The arrivals as of 31st December 2009 constitute approximately 44% of the expected crop which is almost the same percentage at the same time last year indicating a higher crop this season. Arrivals were delayed this season due to a late monsoon resulting in late sowing and harvesting. Further, the disturbances in Andhra Pradesh, inclement weather in the entire North Region and the recent Ginners strike in Punjab have also delayed arrivals.

The current international market situation and the Dollar-Rupee parity are likely to lead to less than expected exports and more than expected imports.

The quality of arrivals continues to be normal and appears to be exceptionally good in Andhra Pradesh.
