The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its April estimates (as on 30th April 2013) of the cotton crop for the season 2012-13. CAI has placed the cotton crop for the season 2012-13 at 352.00 lakh bales. The projected Balance Sheet drawn by the CAI for the year 2012-13 estimated the total cotton supply at 420.21 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 278.00 lakh bales, thus leaving an available surplus of 142.21 lakh bales. The arrivals as on 30th April 2013 are placed at 321.50 lakh bales. A statement containing the State-wise estimates of Crop and Balance Sheet for the season 2012-13 and the corresponding data for the previous season 2011-12 is given below.
The average daily arrivals continue at a pace of approximately 60,000 bales.
Sowing has already commenced in the northern zone. The Association urges the Government to fix the MSP for cotton at the earliest to facilitate timely decision by the farmers.
